According to a report from the U.S. Department of Education, the state of Texas has failed to educate its students with special needs and maintain programs to aid them in their education.

The Students

The U.S Department of Education has stated that Texas has failed to find and aid students with special needs in their education and has violated federal law in the process as well as purposely neglecting the number of students which are part of the special education program.

The report states that Texas has failed to find and aid students with special needs in their education as well as failing to promote and encourage students with special needs into their public education as well as completely neglect the states special education program.

U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said in a statement that “Far too many students in Texas had been precluded from receiving supports and services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.”

Texas holds about 5 million students which gives them the second largest public education system in the U.S.

According to investigation reports by the Houston Chronicle newspaper, many districts were purposely delayed and denied services to children with disabilities in order to maintain their enrollment quotas, leaving countless students with special needs neglected and without the proper education they require.

Children with autism, dyslexia, ADHD, epilepsy and much more were denied or neglected because it would be more expensive and costly to enroll and education a child with special needs thus saving the state funds in the high billions. This policy has left students with special needs uneducated, neglected and without available and properly designed education to aid students with disabilities.

Governor Greg Abbot “The past dereliction of duty on the part of many school districts to serve our students, and the failure of TEA to hold districts accountable, is worthy of criticism.”
